Mobile porn becoming the norm in schools?

Ana Kasparian

Five youngsters in Mayville, New York face obscenity charges after getting caught with pornographic material on their cell phones. Similarly, a 14-year-old boy in Florida recently got suspended for sending photos of a topless woman to all his friends via cell phone. But these under-aged mobile phone sex scandals get worse. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on a story from Pennsylvania, where several young girls are facing charges for taking partially nude photos of themselves and sending them out to their male peers.

It seems that "sexting" is becoming more common in schools throughout the country as mobile phones continue to make everything from social networking sites and porn accessible to kids. But why is this even a conundrum? Wouldn't it make sense to just snatch cell phones away from these students and allow them to be KIDS!? I get it, parents want to know that they have constant access to their children. But 14-year-olds have no business carrying around cell phones with texting capabilities. More often than not, kids don't need cell phones. How often do kids call their parents with real emergencies?

When looking at the bigger picture, it's obvious that sex education is a solution to this. It is crucial to teach young girls the value of their bodies. Young boys are always going to find ways to view porn. But the troubling aspect of all this is the fact that young girls feel as though they have to compete with porn. The need to be taught better. Some may want to move away from discussing these topics in school. But if you don't teach kids the difference between right and wrong, they won't know how to distinguish between the two.
