Is it not true that if you get your link on a site with a high pagerank that it will help raise your site's pagerank?
I was always under the impression that it does, I was always working hard to get listed (recip or not) on sites with higher pageranks than mine. (Now days, most sites request that your pagerank be as high or higher than theirs anyway - I took this to mean that your high or higher rank will help make theirs higher or keep it high. I always thought that's how it works.)
Yeah, I know - I need to take a few SEO classes. |

That's kind of correct, but you can also get a higher pagerank by being linked on many "low PR pages".
Actually how I think of the whole thing is this:
There is a number of total links in the internet: N
There is a number of links going to a given website: M
When you click on a random link in the internet, you'll have a probability P to go to a given website. However that probability is not (1/N) * M, because you are more likely going to click on a link on ebay than on a link on a link on some-website-nobody-knows.com . That means that links from ebay are more important (which is expressed by their pagerank).
Okay, now you do that totally insane calculation and find the probability to go to a given website by clicking on that random link. It will probably be something like 0.00000000....00121, with the highest being 0.0000001 (or something). Now you say: "Okay, nobody can remember those numbers. I'll make 0.0000001 my PR 10." Then you do that for every calculated probability - not linear but kind of potentally.
However: The Pagerank is less important than most people think. Try to have keywords in your URL and page. That's more effective than just relying on your PR. |

XXXturbo I respect such smart guys like you
Actually PR is interesting thing. And google is keeping the info about it in secret. The real information about PR of one page influence on another one costs a lot. I think that trial and error method is the only way to find out this. |

Actually the BASIC pagerank algorithm is not so secret after all. However it's not used in that very basic state.
You can find more information on wikipedia and on ianrogers.net (you should really read that last one if you're interested in the topic).
And to repeat it once more: PageRank is just one of (according to Google) over 200 different ranking algorithms that are used to give out results pages. |
